On the Subject of Off Keys
The name could’ve been “Off Pitch”, but we stuck with the pattern.
Note: If the runes above the module are anything but question marks, you are looking at the wrong manual.
An “Off Keys” module has a reversed keyboard ranging from the note “B” to the note “C”. There are three symbol runes inscribed within a touch-sensitive pad. Match each symbol to a keyboard key to disarm the module.
Four unique keys on the keyboard play incorrect pitches. These four keys have been tuned slightly flat or slightly sharp. Use the graphic below to find the name of each detuned key.
Three of the keys must be assigned to one of the musical runes at the top of the module. Though they appear as question marks, playing any key will reveal the true symbols inscribed behind each mark.
NOTE: All runes map to exactly one key. No two keys map to the same rune. One detuned key will remain unpaired.
Locate the three runes on the second page’s diagram. Some corners of each rune’s cell have a circled key’s name. These are the two or three keys that the rune could map to. With this in mind, know that there is only one way to assign each rune to a unique detuned key.
To map a rune to a key, tap the rune then its corresponding key on the keyboard. Map all three runes to their correct key to disarm the module. Be careful, as you cannot change your answer once you select a rune and a key.
To submit your answer, press the unused detuned key after the other keys have been pressed. If all runes are not correctly paired, a strike will be given, and the runes will reappear.
Use the following graphic as a reference to how tones are mapped onto the reversed 12-note piano/keyboard.
