On the Subject of The Grand Prix

And it’s lights out and away we go!

SEE APPENDIX F1 FOR A LIST OF ALL DRIVERS, THEIR INITIALS AND THEIR RESPECTIVE TEAM.

This module consists of a Formula 1 racing leaderboard, with all the drivers from the teams in the 2020–2021 season. It displays the times relative to one another and the sector they’re currently in. Next to the leaderboard is a display with a lap counter, a flag below it, and an information box.

Every time you solve a non-ignored module, the lap counter will go up by one, and a new flag will be shown. Each flag will be accompanied by information which will be displayed in the info box below the flag. This information could be about in which sector this flag is being shown, or for which driver, or both.

Each flag has an impact on the current standings, by changing the time difference between cars. The time difference between two cars at the is called the “delta”. The first green flag to be shown will display the initial standings and each driver and the driver in front of them. Treat this flag as having happened before all others. The first driver is marked as “Inter.”, and should be treated as 0. For every driver, calculate their delta to the first driver. You will modify these new deltas as the race progresses.

Do not rearrange the drivers until submission.

When you reach the final lap, which is shown next to the current lap, input the final standings at the end of the race to solve the module. To swap positions, first press the driver you want to swap, and then the driver you want to swap that driver with. Press the flag at the final lap to submit the order.

If the order is incorrect, a strike will be handed. When that happens, the positions will be reset, all the deltas will be displayed next to the drivers again and you can choose one lap to review its info by navigating with the arrow keys, and pressing the flag again to review that lap. Lastly, to retry the submission, press the down arrow after reviewing a lap.

Table A: List of flags and their actions.

For consistency’s sake, all drivers are driving at equal pace/speed and there are no overtakes aside from when a driver increases their delta due to flags. The only factor that changes the grid standings are the flags.

Flag Type Flag Icon Flag Effect
Track clear
While this flag is shown, the deltas of all the cars will be displayed next to the driver name. Add these to their current deltas.
Warning
  • If the flag is solid yellow, increase the delta of any driver in the flag’s sector number by 1 second.
  • Otherwise, the letters “SC” will be within the flag, in which case a Safety Car will be deployed, and everyone’s delta will be set to 2 seconds behind the driver in front of them. (This uses the original ordering.)
Backmarkers
  • If the listed driver started in the top 3 and they are in sector 1, subtract 0.5 seconds from their delta.
  • Otherwise, if 5 laps have passed, add 1 second to their delta.
  • Otherwise, add 0.75 seconds to their delta.

Table A: List of flags and their actions. (Cont.)

Flag Type Flag Icon Flag Effect
Suspension
  • If a driver name is displayed, they crashed and go to the lowest available position.*
  • Regardless of if someone crashed, a restart happens. See Section B for restart rules.
Penalty
  • The displayed driver is penalized. Refer to Section C for the penalties.
Retirement
or
Disqualified
  • If the flag is white, the displayed driver “Did Not Finish” and go to the lowest available position.*
  • If the flag is black, the displayed driver are “Disqualified” and go to position 20, regardless of prior retirements.

* As an example, if someone else already retired (dropped out) and therefore ended 20th, the lowest available position for the next drop-out will be 19th. A black flag may only be shown once.

Section B: Restart conditions

If the red flag is shown, the race will be suspended to clear any incidents. In this module, the way the race resumes again is determined by edgework.

  • If a lit indicator labelled “BOB” is present, the race will be restarted and everyone’s delta will be set to 2 seconds behind the driver in front of them. (This uses the original ordering.)
  • Otherwise, if the total lap count is equal to, or greater than, the battery count, the race will be restarted with the first 10 drivers adding 5 seconds to their deltas, plus 5 seconds more for each driver in front of them. (This uses the original ordering.)
  • Otherwise, if the first or last digit of the Serial Number is equal to the sector number, the race will be restarted and every odd-placed driver adding 2 seconds to their deltas, plus 1 seconds more for each driver in front of them. (This uses the original ordering.)
  • If none of the above apply, the race will be restarted without any changes.

Section C: Penalty severety

When a driver is shown the black and white flag, they are warned for unsportsmanlike conduct. In this module, it means that the driver who is shown the flag gets a time penalty. To determine the severity of the penalty, follow the instructions below.

  • If the driver is part of team Alfa Romeo, Williams or Haas and is in position 15th to 20th, they will get a 3 second penalty.
  • Otherwise, if the driver had a flag shown to them in the lap before, they will get a 10 second penalty.
  • Otherwise, if the driver is in Sector 1 and 3 laps have passed, they will get a 5 second penalty.
  • Otherwise, if the flag is shown in lap 1...
    • If the serial number contains a letter that is also in the name of the team they are in, they will get a 5 second penalty.
    • Otherwise, the penalty will instead be 10 seconds.
  • Otherwise, if the serial number contains a letter that is also present in the last name of the driver, they get a penalty equal to the length of their last name.
  • If none of the above apply, the penalty will be 3 seconds.
